FRONT COVER PRODUCTION TASK: LR!

FRONT COVER PRODUCTION TASK: LR:

Finished magazine image:

WWW:
This is a solid magazine cover that is clearly recognisable as Vogue. I like your evaluation discussing the challenges of finding a cover model and developing skills in Photoshop and there is no doubt that your coursework next year will be stronger having developed your skills in this area. Your point on meeting the key conventions of a Vogue cover is spot on – pretty much all the content is there so it’s just a case of developing our technical and design skills to open up the top levels.

EBI:
There are a few good lessons to take from this production work. Firstly, the image is good quality but I think the Photoshop cut-out looks a bit unprofessional in places. Secondly, the text is difficult to read in places – colour choices and text layout is so important to make it easy for the audience to read the words. In terms of font and typography, I wonder if you could have used sans serif and serif typography more consistently in terms of design. You also needed to do the last bit of the evaluation where you place your cover alongside real examples – I think if you did this you would find it doesn’t quite have the professional finish we’re looking for if we want A/A*. That’s the target to aim for next year!

Strengths:
  • I have included the key conventions of a magazine such as, title, cover line, barcode and central image.
  • Represents the recreation of a typical vogue magazine

How to improve:
  • Improvement on the colour scheme
  • Getting the hang of photoshop, being able to cut and crop the image, professionally
  • Using most used fonts that are typically used on a vogue magazine
  • Constructing effective narratives that controls connotations
Advice:
  • Space out time, in terms of what part of the magazine you want to complete and when
  • The editing app used (photoshop) make sure you know how to utilise it so its much easier and looks more professional
  • Have creative ideas on the cover line so it attracts the audience and makes your magazine stand out
