INTRODUCTION TO FEMINISM:

Everyday Sexism

Watch the Everyday Sexism TED talk from Laura Bates (linked above) and answer the following questions:

Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?

she has started the project due to wanting to raise awareness of the subject of men and women being objectified on a daily basis.

How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies?

The concept of post-feminism is related to the concept of daily sexism since it first raises awareness while also offering those who may be affected a platform to share their experiences so that others may understand what they may be going through. I believe feminism is necessary in western nations because, according to recent data, women are underpaid compared to males, and because of a recent incident.

Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project?

The accessibility of it being online gives people enough privacy and comfort to be able to share their experiences with other people.

Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required? What is YOUR view on the future of feminism?

With how feminism is evolving over time I believe that we will not need another project of such. However in some strict culture societies it might be harder to make a progress on sexism and gender inequalities.

Media Magazine: The fourth wave?

Read the article: The Fourth Wave? Feminism in the Digital Age in MM55 (p64). You'll find the article in our Media Magazine archive here.

Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?

Networked feminism aims to tackle social equality issues which has led to people having different aims for what they would like to achieve with their project of feminism.

What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave of ‘networked feminism’?

FIRST WAVE: The suffragette movement- earth 20th century. Women campaigned for the right to vote.

SECOND WAVE: Campaigning for reproductive rights and equal pay - 60s to 90s.

THIRD WAVE: Women receiving more employment opportunities, whilst  reclaiming femininity. 1990's- present

FOURTH WAVE: Using social media and technology for campaigning and activism

Focus on the examples in the article. Write a short summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaign, This Girl Can.

HeForShe:

This project focuses on the idea of having gender equality for males as well as women. Watson's campaign highlights the fact that feminism does not support equality, but instead promotes singularity among only focusing on women's rights. Like everyday sexism, HeForShe also used social media platforms to raise awareness of the project. This project has been criticised for appearing to support the stereotype that females need to rely on males.

FCKH8:

This is one of the most popular and a recognizable campaign while also being a "for profit" campaign, which it had been criticized for due to the campaign exploiting the idea of the popularity of the idea of feminism coming to the world. The campaign was also criticized due to advertising featuring young girls using explicit vocabulary.

This Girl Can:

This Girl Can is a fitness campaign. This project has well received by members of the public as it promotes the importance of women's health and fitness, without body shaming them or exploiting their sexuality. This campaign uses images, videos and fitness videos of women that are not portrayed in a sexual manner but in a way of showing how strong they are physically strong.

What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?

I do believe that there is a fourth wave of feminism, because women have received some of their rights in terms of paid work, education etc. But there is some sort of sexism that go around and against women, this can be in terms of  the society and their thinking one major controversial topic is Andrew Tate but can also be other factors like policies and how the government functions. Everyday sexism project is most definitely an extension of the third wave of feminism. Therefore I believe that we are in a mix of waves of feminism.
