What is regulation and why do media industries need to be regulated?

Very few industries leave the organisations or companies who operate in that sector to their own devices. Systems of regulation are required to provide rules and regulations to ensure that organisations operate fairly.

 What is OFCOM responsible for?

OFCOM is responsible for regulating the majority of TV and film that is brought into the UK.

Look at the section on the OFCOM broadcasting code. Which do you think are the three most important sections of the broadcasting code and why?

The most important code in my opinion is section 6 because the media influences and almost controls the main sources of information for the elections. In which case the media should be able to broadcast a clear unbiased argument.

Do you agree with OFCOM that Channel 4 was wrong to broadcast 'Wolverine' at 6.55pm on a Sunday evening? Why?

No, I disagree with OFCOM because 'Wolverine' is rated PG which doesn't involve much violence in which case it should be allowed to broadcasted and shown to the audience via channel 4.

List five of the sections in the old Press Complaints Commission's Code of Practice.

1. Young people should be free to complete their time at school without unnecessary intrusion.

2. Pupils must not be approached or photographed at school without the permission of the school authorities.

3. The restrictions on intruding into privacy are particularly relevant to enquiries about individuals in hospitals or similar institutions

4. When reporting suicide, care should be taken to avoid excessive detail about the method used.

5. It is unacceptable to photograph individuals in private places without their consent.

6.The restrictions on intruding into privacy are particularly relevant to enquiries about individuals in hospitals or similar institutions.

Why was the Press Complaints Commission criticised?

This is because many newspaper outlets were publishing formations that would break the code of the PCC code of practice.

What was the Leveson enquiry and why was it set up?

The Leveson enquiry was the phone hacking scandal in which two reporters were imprisoned for illegally calling the royal family which was set up with little evidence

What was the PCC replaced with in 2014?

By the independent press standards organisation.

What is your opinion on press regulation?
Is a free press an important part of living in a democracy or should newspapers face statutory regulation like TV and radio?

Press regulation is some sort of freedom that gives people the chance to speak their own views on things however this could be good to a certain point because some people may get offended with what is being said. The press is an important part of living in a democracy because so many people find this a a way to get their information so the whole story should be shown and not just a small part of it or half of it.

Why is the internet so difficult to regulate?

This is because the internet has different outlets of information and many different users that release content.
